Highly Effective Teachers: More than Highly Qualified

Under No Child Left Behind, states developed policies and programs that helped most teachers meet the highly qualified requirements. Now, many No Child Left Behind reauthorization discussions are focused on moving teacher quality a step further a highly effective teacher for every child. The first panel addresses the issue of teacher effectiveness from their perspectives as national leaders in teacher preparation, policy, and practice. In the second panel, two Tennessee master teachers join Assistant Commissioner Susan Bunch to share findings from Tennessee's work on issues related to teacher quality and effectiveness.

Technology Proficiency: A Moving Target

The call for schools to become centers for 21st Century teaching and learning have not gone unheeded. During this webcast, state and national leaders in technology will discuss efforts underway to support schools in their efforts to help teachers and students reach goals of technology proficiency across the curriculum. The first panel includes leaders from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and the Partnership for 21st Century Skills who introduce new standards and a framework for helping define technology proficiency. Panel 2 highlights work in two states in the region and a perspective from the national level and includes Jenelle Leonard from the U.S. Department of Education, Wynn Smith from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, and Brenda Williams from the West Virginia Department of Education.

Becoming Data Smart: A New Tool for Effective Data Use

The Assessment and Accountability Comprehensive Center (AACC) has developed and recently launched a new data resource to help build the capacity of educators at all levels to use data more effectively for decision making. The Appalachia Regional Comprehensive Center (ARCC) is collaborating with the AACC to provide this webcast, which will explore the Data Use for Continuous Quality Improvement Web site and how it can be used by educators within and beyond ARCC’s five-state region.
The Web site details a process for data use applicable to different types of users—from the classroom to the state level—and links relevant resources to those uses. The site includes an interactive Map of Key Capacities, which will be explored during the webcast. Input from classroom, school, district, and state leaders on how to use the tool will be included during the webcast.

Parent Involvement: Meeting High Expectations with Practical Solutions

Learn how students, families, and schools can work together to support high expectations for all students to succeed. Using a research-based parent involvement framework developed by the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL), this webcast addresses six areas important for helping teachers, schools, and districts work with families to support high expectations and success for all students. The framework is aligned with NCLB, National PTA Standards, and current research on parent involvement; and it is based on actual experience with parent/family programs.
